Year End at SBYC
June 11, 2008

We are up to 100 adults/kids and I wanted to reiterate a few points:

  • SBYC 5pm (starting promptly as we have lots to cover). Phone #492-3150 SBYC. Should conclude around 7:30pm
  • Use caution in parking lot and keep an eye on your scout/children. There is a Hobie Regatta this weekend at SBYC and they will be arriving throughout the evening – trucks, cars, trailers, sailboats, etc. These are out of town people/non club members and won’t necessarily be thinking to look out for 50 scouts! We’ll have signs up w/ caution, etc. Also kids are only allowed on the docks w/ a parent.
  • We’ll be serving hotdogs, hoagies, ice tea, lemonade and pretzels/chips. We have volunteers bringing desserts!
  • The craft will involve fabric paint. Please have your scout come in uniform w/ a shirt to change into or bring a smock.
  • There is no “fee” per head, however, we will have a “donation” box and ask the you make a small donation to help the Pack cover food/craft/etc…if you can. If you want to bring a check – “LBI Pack 18”.
  • Island Beach State Park – we will be collecting fees for this event that is in Sept. 2008. Info will be provided but I need to send in our roster/money on Sat 6/14. $25 per scout overnight or day campers. Under 4, free. Adult only day camper $15. Checks to Jersey Shore Council.
  • Tigers – if they have their blue shirts, wear them and if not their oranges T’s are good. Bring a smock or shirt to change into.
  • Shirts/Sweatshirts – Yes!, Lynda Scholey will be handing them out upon your arrival. Please pick them up first.
  • Parking – We should be OK at 5pm - park as close to the main clubhouse as possible. There should be plenty of parking, the issue is when we move the groups from station to station we cross thru the parking lot to the beach area. We don’t want the kids to “run” ahead.>

This is the timeline that we will “try” to keep:

  • 5:00pm – Flag Salute
  • 5:00pm-5:20pm – Rank Advancement Awards
  • 5:20pm-5:45pm – Hotdogs & Hoagies
  • 5:50pm – 7:30pm – Rotate 3 groups thru 3 stations

Any questions, give me a call on my cell 709-6332 (will not check email on Fri) Thanks…Karen

Family Camp at Camo Citta
June 11th, 2008

We will be going Sat. July 19 - Sunday, July 20th. The theme is "Ancient Greece". The scouts will participate in Grecian Games, a Greek craft, BB guns, archery, swim in the lake or fish in the lake and a Saturday evening campfire and skits. It includes Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast in the dining hall. There are tents and cots at each campsite.

Those of us who went last year had a great time. (Ask the Madonnas, the Maines, the Janiszewski's, the Schwings)

The fee is $40/person. Please let me know it is coming by email (karen_Schwing@yahoo.com or phone 492-0949). Checks can be made payable to Jersey Shore Council.

Any questions, feel free to email Karen Schwing or call 492-0949 and I will try my best to answer any questions).

Friendship District Day Camp

Island Beach State Park Camporee
June 7th, 2008

Most important - the new registration date is 6/15/08 – not 5/30/08.

The fee is $25 for all Scouts and campers – this registration fee includes a commemorative patch, a T-Shirt, a water bottle, and a drawstring back pack to hold everything. The fee also goes to cover the costs of dumpsters, porta-johns, lighting, supplies, etc.

Scouts do not have to camp for the weekend, they can also come just for the day on Saturday. Scouts that are day tripping must pay the $25 fee and will receive the giveaways, but there is a separate fee of $15 for all Non-Scout Day Trippers (no giveaways).

What is this Camporee about?

For the Cub Scouts there is:

1- The Adventure of camping on Island Beach for the first time ever – no other group has ever been allowed to camp there. Many of us have camped at Beach Jam before, but this is not beach camping in Wildwood. This is an entirely different environment which many Scouts may not get to appreciate during their Scouting years – as Cub Scouts or as Boy Scouts. And for the Cubs this will be their first opportunity to participate in a Council Camporee with 1500 other participants.

2- The Learning opportunity of taking part in the many fun programs being put on by The US Sportsman Alliance, Hooked on Fishing Not on Drugs, NJ State Park Police, Navesink Retriever's Club, Salt Water Fisherman, and many others. We will also have advancement opportunities for the Cubs – they will be able to work on advancements or electives that deal with the outdoors.

3- The Challenge of being part of an event that has never been done before along with the unique challenges of this environment. How will the Scouts adapt to a weekend on the rustic beachfront? How will they pull off a district wide Bonfire/ Campfire Program on Saturday night? And there will be the challenge of BB & Archery Shooting, a Surf Fishing Derby, a Sandcastle Building Contest, and a Treasure Hunt for Cubs.

4- The Responsibility associated with giving back to our environment and more specifically our State Parks program. In Boy Scouts we talk about doing a Good Turn Daily, well this is our opportunity to do a huge collective Good Turn. All units will be asked to volunteer one hour of service to the park. Imagine what 1500 hours of service can accomplish in one weekend? (That’s over 180 8-hour work days!) The Cub Scouts will be handling the ocean side beach clean ups because this will be the easiest work for them.

These four ideas – Adventure, Learning, Challenge and Responsibility – will make this a great program.

Talk this over with your Scouts, Leaders and families, and please consider taking part in this unique opportunity.
